Mexico Ceramics Research

In the past period of time in West Mexico, vitrified structures were manufactured in a tremendous range of mankind, living beings as well as vegetable types in order to serve as companions for those dead people. When being buried in shaft tombs, the dead would be accompanied by a variety of ceramic staff whose value depends largely on how affluent the dead used to be, the richer the dead was, the better companies would be. More often than not, they tombs would be buried deeper than 50 feet and sometimes they had a huge amount of layers. Hence, excavating the tombs is not as easy and simple as we expect. Among all the ceramic figures in the past several decades in West Mexico’s history, two of which will be discussed and analyzed in this essay in order to help more readers have a better understanding in regards to them. The two figures are the Seated Spiny Hunchback and the Seated Figure.

There are a variety of similarities of the Seated Spiny Hunchback and the Seated Figure, which are that both of them are made in West Mexico and made of terracotta illustrating the excellent craftsmanship in the ancient time leading thousands of hundreds of visitors to see the elegant demeanor of each of them every year. It is worthy to mention that these two masterpieces have captivated those archaeologists to study. The accession of the Seated Spiny Hunchback (hereafter, it will be abbreviated by Statue No. 1) is Number 95.021 while the accession of the Seated Figure (hereafter, it will be abbreviated by Statue No. 2) is Number 88.073.

The Statue No.1 is in perfect condition, that is to say, this statue has been preserving and maintaining for years. Obviously, it is like a turtleman with the height of 6.5” and there is a considerable number of apophysis in its turtle shell making it more vivid. The loopback is visible, there are a couple of lines in its waist in order to make it more structured. However, unfortunately, one spine missed as time lapsed. Hence, it can come to a conclusion that the spine is not very firm as we expect. The other spines seem vulnerable as well, because there are a variety of fractures. As long as a person whoever he or she is wants to touch it in spite of having no purpose to devastate it, the spine is very likely to be destroyed. Furthermore, the turtle has enjoyed a reputation of longevity, the original idea of creating this statue could be the reason that the designer had the desire to be immortal, or the designer wanted someone to be immortal. This statue could be designed for those royal families.

As for the Statue No.2, the condition of it is more or less the same as its predecessor which has been discussed previously. The excellent condition makes it easier to be analyzed. The terracotta that reaches up to 8.75” height is just similar to a friendly monster which was bowing to its master. Clearly, this statue has four separated legs and two arms. The four legs confirmed that this statue could be stood successfully, which makes it like a horse to some extent. Moreover, this horseman put its right hand in its waist while putting its left hand in front of its mouth. This behavior could be a bow manifesting that this horseman was seeing a very supreme person while doing this gesture. However, we could see that the color has been fade away with time, particularly for the part in its face. Meaning to say, the designer might have neglected the paining or the paining skill at that period of time was not as brilliant as it is contemporarily. In addition, there is a wide range of spine which could also be called hair in its head and around its cheeks. The spines are sharp and clear, but these spines did not make it horrible. The facial expression that the Statue No.2 has is like a server who serves people all the time. This horseman was afraid of being scolded by its master, therefore, it had to bow and be careful.

There are some similarities in the Statue No.1 and Statue No.2 illustrating that these terracotta were manufactured in more or less the same period of time. Primarily, the two statues were painted orange. Although the color in Statue No.2 was fade away, the main color of it was still orange. Secondly, both of them have spines. In statue No.1, there are a lot of spines in its turtle shell, and all the spines are bigger than those in the Statue No.2. In the next statue, there are a plenty of spines in its head and around its cheeks. Additionally, these two statues could represent a respective animal. The Statue No.1 represents the turtle which could bring longevity while the Statue No.2 is a symbol of a horse which is famous for its mild temper and serving its owner. Last but not least, both of them were designed for the royal family, if not, they must have been designed for those elites or aristocrats who were affluent and had money to burn.

Of course, these statues have some differences on the other hand. First of all, the Statue No.2 is in a better condition, although the color of it has been worn away, it is still complete, it did not lose anything. The Statue No.1 lost one of its spines in its turtle shell, this is a kind of damage. Secondly, the Statue No.2 is taller than its predecessor. Thirdly, the loopback of Statue No.1 is more noticeable than the latter one, as it has been known to everyone of us, the more clear the loopback is, the more vivid the statue will be. In the end, the Statue No.1 is much brighter than its counterpart. We can see that the Statue No.1 is shining, it seems that the terracotta has been covered with oil.

In a nutshell, it is very conspicuous that the Seated Spiny Hunchback has something similar as the Seated Figure, at the same time, they also have multifarious differences. However, it is more obvious that these two masterpieces made by brilliant designers in ancient West Mexico and reflected the ancient lives there are equally extraordinary and delicate. The meanings of each figure may not be exactly the same, but they are closed. We should make no stone unturned to make sure that these two masterpieces are preserved in a perfect way so that our offspring will be able to look at and appreciate them as well. It will be a great pity if we destroy them.  【-Z】
