The Elgin marbles, named after the then British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Lord Thomas Elgin during the period of 1799 to 1803, are a grand batch of ancient Greek art sculptures. As they were originally artistic treasures removed from the capital city of Athens, to be specific the famous temple Parthenon, which is the temple to the Goddess Athena located in the heart of Athens city, so people also usually call these sculptures as Parthenon marbles. These sculptures mainly included about certain 75 meters of the sculpted frieze things, and also seventeen roughly life sized marble figures from its triangle walls(or pediments) as well as some carven panels high beyond the high pillars. As the cultural treasure of the ancient Greek civilization, these sculptures are more and more paid attention to and valued by not only the world scholars but the Greek official government. After the Britain Empire got possession of this batch of sculpture in the beginning of the 19th century from Greece, the Greek government has begun asking for permanent return of these treasures which are now all displayed in the British Museum in London, for example they made an official request to the UNESCO in 1982 to call for return of these marbles, but the British museum refused to follow. From what I see, I would say these sculptures can be remained in the London museum as they are now. One of the personal reasons that lead to such an idea is that we human being have to respect history. There may be countless factors resulting to Lord Elgin’s transportation of much of the sculpture survivals back to Britain with the approval of the Ottoman authorities, this did happen and cannot be changed now.What we need to do is not merely to lament the sad fact, but to figure out a best solution to enable this sculpture collection to benefit the most world audience as possible.Another thought of myself is that no matter where the artistic sculptures are displayed, their artistic value is unchanged and will probably never add value, why bother to move them from one place to another with no good reason at all? Moreover, the removal of these sculptures can not avoid possible damages during the long time travel, though people today are sure to make the best protection in this process, but if this damage does happen, it has to be a measureless loss to human culture and civilization.So this is the reason that why I deem it is better for the general public to leave the Elgin sculptures in the British museum as they are now. This kind of respect for history is to face up what happened in history, and choose what is best for world heritage of the crystallization of human wisdom.
In fact, what I stated above of the author’s personal ideas is yet not the whole story, however.There are quite a lot voices in regard of what the Elgin marbles should be located and displayed. How these voices are sided with the author’s ideas, if they do? The first view is that Elgin did not transported all the marbles to London, Though the majority are in Acropolis museum in Athens and in the British museum in London(roughly 30% each), actually around two thirds of all the Parthenon survival sculptures are located in different museums across Europe, for example the Louvre and the Vatican museum.This means a lot more people can have easy access to these precious sculptures, which is much better than if all the sculpted marbles are in Athens or in London.Especially for London, which is more like a metropolis city in the world and can attracted an extensive range of people around the world to study and do research to promote worldwide knowledge of ancient Greek culture. What’s more, when studying closely about the Acropolis museum about its applied colors and human conceptions can help a lot in the aspect of special imaging technology. The British also defends its position by mentioning its grand collection of the world’s artistic value. Its collection ranges from the dawn of human history to the present day, of which the Parthenon sculptures are with no doubt a significant part.The marbles are a special resource for human beings to reexamine its cultural identities and probe into the complicated and colorful human cultures. And the trustees too, are in need of admiration because they have been taking good care of the collection and now most of the objects are available online for people all over the world to study and appreciate. Each year millions of visitors everywhere come to admire the sculptures and think deeply against their own backgrounds, and more importantly free of charge! Actually when it comes to artistry stuff, it can be seen as a shared heritage of the world and no political boundaries should be mentioned. Just like the saying that Knowledge knows no national boundary, advanced artistic culture should encounter no invisible walls when spreading to other parts of the worlds.
In consideration of the disputed topic, this short paper begins with a simple introduction of the famous Elgin marbles, how they ended in London in history and what they are. Following this is the personal view of the author, how the author have in mind about whether the marbles should be remained in London instead of returned to its originated place the Athens city. The final main part justifies this personal view from a larger picture that there are many other voices saying that the Elgin marbles ought to be kept in London for the good of the general public, that all artistic valuables like the Elgin marbles have no national boundaries and they end well to serve to the great world culture. -w
