In 2012, Susan Cain brought her initiative, the Quiet Revolution, to a full swing by her speech delivered through TED.com, entitled The Power of Introverts. By telling introverts in the world that it is perfectly acceptable to react in their own ways to social stimulations, Cain made a strong stance for the contributions of introverts to the society (Cain, 2012). In the meantime, Cain pushed her initiative one step further through the launch of her themed website, thepowerofintroverts.com, on which she posted A Manifesto for Introverts, stating her beliefs of introverted behaviors in daily lives (Cain, 2012). The Manifesto, in many ways, correlates with Cain’s speech, both of which suggest that the contemporary society often mistakenly stereotype or even undermine introverted people, when the latter could potentially develop into great leaders and thinkers. Yet, the two different media of delivery determined the texts’ content formation and the effectiveness of both texts in terms of fitting to their purposes.

Cain led off her speech with an interesting life story about her experience at school camp as an introvert. By adding a sense of personal touch, her experience echoed with a number of people in the audience as laughter was aroused in the crowd with indication of resonance. Starting with her personal experience clearly helped Cain build rapport with her audience, and eased into her topic with successful grasp of attention. Cain’s speech later on developed into her perception on how introverts internalize their psychological needs in contemporary society. In claiming that the social norms force introverts to perform boldly and assertively, Cain called for the public’s acknowledgement on the existing bias against introverts. The way she repeatedly brought up that the neglect of introverts’ psychological needs would result in a loss to the community and workplace strengthened her arguments. Up till this point of her speech, Cain had made a rather concrete case for the introverts in a compassionate tone.

To avoid any misinterpretation, Cain pinpointed the more appropriate definition of introversion. Such statement assisted Cain in establishing her credibility as an introverted expert in introversion, upon which, she began to depict typical “groupthink" scenarios that took place in our daily lives. Once again, she successfully narrowed the distance between her pedestal and the audience. Cain then moved on listing well-respected world leaders who categorize themselves as introverts, indicating that introverts do not necessarily shy away from the spotlight. In fact, they are very much capable in response to their calling. Her examples on classrooms and workplaces were perfectly down to earth and the introverted leadership figures made her arguments even more irrefutable.

Cain reiterated that she held nothing against extroverts, and that she was merely calling for more balance in the society. Neutralizing her stance undoubtedly made her ideas more easily acceptable. In support of the claim that creativity and productivity often spark amongst introverted people, Cain drew examples from Darwin, Dr.Seuss and Steve Wozniak’s career development. She elaborated further that collaboration is important though; solitude does produce much desired outcomes, such as world-awakening revelations. Throughout this part of her speech, Cain gradually built on the power of introverts with the backing of convincing evidence. Furthermore, Cain explained her take on the leading cause of the existing bias against introverts, blaming on cultural inheritance. The introduction of reasonable casual relations led the audience to agree to a greater extent that the bias against introverts, which most probably stemmed from the “culture of personality” in the beginning of 20th century, is not exactly fitting with today’s culture.

Her speech went on coherently with a clear flow of thought. However, just at the point where her script became too technical, she cleverly introduced another personal story about her grandfather, the rabbi. Cain’s shrewd infusion of personal experience in her speech is well adapted for the means of delivery of her content and for properly addressing her target audience. In wrapping up of her speech, Cain called for action from the introverts, which was her ultimate goal. In many ways, the final part of her speech resonated with the prior parts. The tightly knitted contents present the audience with a cohesive and indestructible argument that the power of introverts needs to be better understood and respected.

In general, Cain’s speech successfully supported her argument, and she manipulated the medium that transmitted her message masterfully. Her identification with the audience, personal stories that melted the speaker-audience boundary and proper introduction of evidence and well-known examples all boosted the impact of her speech via increasing credibility and affinity.

On the other hand, the manifesto, in a way, seems like a concentrated version of the speech. The 16 statements are the essence of Cain’s beliefs in regards to introversion. The well-thought texts bear conscientious contemplation, and cover aspects ranging from daily activities of the introverts to observations of generic behavioral norms, and even spiritual revelations. The fact that these contents are arranged in a format that is short and concise, suggests careful consideration for the manifesto’s transmission medium. As people have gotten used to glimpse through long paragraphs on the internet, without giving them thorough analysis, bullet-point messages and condensed contents in one line or two receives better readership and are easily absorbed by the audience.

Nonetheless, despite Cain’s effort in making her manifesto seems approachable and applicable, those texts do not connect with the intended audience in the same way as the speech. Especially considering the topic of introversion, the communication would be much efficient and effective when the delivered contents address the audience in a more intimate manner. And to fully apprehend the deeply imbedded intentions of the manifesto, one must take the time to catch up with Cain’s stream of thought leading to the campaign, whereas the speech is better at involving its audience and laying the context.

To conclude, Cain’s speech and manifesto, both themed the power of introverts, went a long way in calling for public acknowledgement of the psychological needs of introverted people and recognition of the value of the byproducts of introversion -- creativity and productivity. Both materials are successful in making their arguments in an approachable way. The manifesto stood out for its simplicity and conciseness, while the speech held advantage in adding a personal touch to make the technical contents easier to comprehend. Both texts were delivered through the medium that is appropriate for their intended purposes. However, in my opinion, in specific to the topic of introversion, speech is a much more powerful and effective medium than instructive texts, where the audience could be properly addressed, and the call for action could be better responded.  【-Z】
