Learning group to create the need to pay attention to the matter

I would like to take a small study group I’m presently a member as the example of a "secondary group". This small group, or team, consist of 4 members, are formed as required by the tutor of an elective curriculum. Each team in the class has to do presentation twice a month as the course syllabus planed. In this way, team members are encouraged or push to communicate and cooperate with each other in order to get higher grades.

According to the definition, this small study team can be evidently classified as “learning group that serve the purpose of learning ”. The four members get together from time to time and work on a class assignment or topic to produce a report that has to be present in the class. Through the cooperation with each member, every one of us offers his or her own input, and thus can develop more insight into the assigned topic. After the discussion section, all together we find a best way to present our idea and eventually have the most satisfactory output. In this process, each member undertakes different smaller assignment according to his or her strength to accomplish the presentation and get good outcomes.

From my perspective, “nonsummativity” and “interdependence” are the two most outstanding characteristics in our group. To be specific, each time a topic was assigned, our team sat down and discuss, gathering perspectives from each other and came up with the most appropriate way to present after critical thinking and making compromise. And honestly, the presentation turns out to have better effect than anyone of us do alone. It typically shows the characters of “nonsummativity” in depth that the group acts as a system and generate effects that not just the sum of its members. Then each of us undertakes a division of work, such as raw material collection, PPT making, back up information preparation (for Q&A) and oral presentation. You can see that the small group works like a flow line in the factory, but in a more complex way, of course. Each member has his own portfolio of work that interrelated with others else. Without anyone of the work portfolio, the presentation cannot be done.

When it comes to the ethical qualities the group displays, though not everyone in this small study group is participant-observer, all members are integrated and willing to take up his or her division of work and committed to get the higher score after each presentation.

Being in the group and communicating and working with other members also change my altitude. I’m impressed by the characteristics of “nonsummativity” in the group, which always reminds me that two heads are better than one. Thus, I learn to make use of the power of unity and cooperation, as well as learning from other people’s strength and respecting their thoughts or ideas.

To be honest, at first I felt hard to communicate with all the members in the team the time it newly formed, for I had pre-judgment to one of the members who always had poor performance in class and failed the exam sometimes. Thanks to the norm that “Member sust contribute their share to the group’s effort”(p 16), after several times of satisfactory cooperation of presentation, I developed a completely different view towards him. He’s a great PPT maker and I found him really excellent in doing that. He may not understand the system of theory well, but he can always have the information presented in a much simpler and briefer way that makes everyone easily understood. Beside, he’s really good at computer and can have the PPT itself look pretty, special and dynamic.
