The movie First Knight was a love story that had something to do with Arthur King, his first knight Lancelot and Guinevere. King Arthur was the ruler of Camelot, where people lived by the belief that human should serve others to achieve happiness. Camelot was the most powerful and advanced nation at that time. Lancelot, whose home was destroyed by robbers, lived upon sword and wandered around the world. He spent most of his life in the wild, without family, friends, goals and beliefs. Since he had nothing to lose, he feared nothing, even death. Guinevere was a noble lady in Leonesse whose safety was threatened by the malefactor Malagant. To seek protection from King Arthur, she decided to devote her marriage. During the journey, Lancelot happened to save Guinevere, as she was caught up with Malagant’s ambush. Lancelot fell in love with her, despite her would-be marriage to King Arthur. After Guinevere’s arrival at Camelot, she was abducted by Malagant who prepared to force Arthur to give up Leonesse. However, it was Lancelot again who pulled Guinevere out of prison. Without any idea of Lancelot’s love for his wife, King Arthur persuaded Lancelot to stay in Camelot and serve other humans as God’s will considering Lancelot’s sharp sword skills and fearlessness. When Lancelot bid final farewell to Guinevere, she could not contain her emotions anymore, and kissed Lancelot deeply and violently. Then King Arthur happened to see what was happening, and angrily to announce a public trial for both. On that day, as King was preoccupied with the affair, Malagant seized the opportunity to capture Camerlot, and killed Arthur. Lancelot helped save the city, and took revenge against Malagant by wielding swords upon his head. Finally, King Arthur ended with death, and trusted the future of his nation and Guinevere to his first Knight Lancelot.

Although the movie was based on the medieval tale Arthur and his Knights of Round Table, it was different from what had been recorded in the history. First of all, in the movie, Lancelot was not so loyal to Arthur as he was in the tale. Lancelot was a rogue. He lived in the way he wanted, not under the control of others. He enjoyed great freedom, but also tasted incredible loneliness, as he had nothing to care about until he encountered Guinevere and Arthur. At Arthur’s invitation and appeal of Guinevere, he became the first Knight in Camelot, and gradually accepted the belief of serving others. In the tale, however, Lancelot poured all his strength to help King Arthur to build a strong nation. His loyalty was beyond any doubt. Second, in the movie, King Arthur was more a kind and tender gentleman than a tough and brutal king. He showed great love, patience and respect for Guinevere. When Guinevere was abducted, he even pray to God that he would rather sacrifice himself for the sake of his wife. He was not determined, sometimes felling into the doubt of questioning his decision, just as he apparently regretted to take a trial against Guinevere. In the tale, however, he was tough-minded, brutal and even forced Guinevere to become his wife. Realistically speaking, what the tale recounted was more plausible than what the movie exhibited when considering the film was more like a modern love story, and that it seemed rare that the ruler or his subordinates would attach more weight to love than ambition or territory.

To dig into the analysis of the film, relationship among three leading characters should be focused on. Lancelot fell in love with Guinevere, but also showed gratitude for King Arthur who shed light on his life by implementing him with the purpose of serving others. Guinevere was also attracted by Lancelot, but needed to contain her emotions, because she had to marry Arthur for the protection of her country. It was her responsibility and will to attach more weight to rationality than her own feelings. it turned out that she just sought protection rather than lover. Arthur was more like a father than a husband to her. Arthur, the ruler of powerful Camelot, lived a highly disciplined life and deemed the law of his nation as priority. He desired true love from Guinevere, just as a piece of sunlight shed on his face. However, he announced a public trial against Guinevere when discovering her disloyalty. If a thread could be drawn through the whole film, then it should be the conflict between ration and emotions. Feelings such as love went against ration such as responsibility and law. For Lancelot, it was the incompatibility between his love for Guinevere and his commitment to Arthur that caused him pain. For Guinevere, it was the conflict between her inside emotions for Lancelot and the burden of fulfilling her obligation that inflicted pain on her. For King Arthur, it was the conflict between his love for Guinevere and the responsibility to preserve the law that caused him pain. Therefore, to put an end to the story, someone must leave or die. That was why Lancelot bid final farewell to Guinevere, or King Arthur ended with death.

Everyone needed a goal to sustain his life, without which, he feared nothing but also tasted no pleasure. The true philosophy of life was not becoming fearless, though it meant on intention that one should fall into the trap of fear and was deprived of ability to respond. If you had nothing to lose, then you had nothing to fear. But if you had nothing to care about, then you had no pleasure from life. Those which you value could become the source of fear, as one might be afraid of losing them. Lancelot was free before he met Guinevere, but also lonely. It was a pain to him to court a woman who was not destined to him. But he finally deemed it valuable to serve others. That was what I have learnt from the movie. It is not all about courage, but belief which could make one valuable in his life.-M
