本文作者认为美国电视情景喜剧《2 Broke Girls》中种族意识形态系列中随处可见,文中列举了han在片中受到的各种歧视.
“2 Broke Girls”, a current popular American TV sitcom was premiered in 2011 and in March, 2014 CBS renewed it for a fourth season. I think race ideology can be seen everywhere in the series. The setting is in a restaurant, and besides white employees, there are also African-American people and Asian-American boss. The most conspicuous racism displays in the restaurant’s owner, Han, a short South Korean guy. In every episode, making fun of Han’s shortness or nationality becomes an indispensable part of every episode. Except some occasional portrait of Han’s kindness and generosity towards Caroline and Max, Han is depicted as a pathetic guy who can’t get any lovers and also a mean boss who pays his employees very little. It’s no doubt the image of Han has aroused much laugh among the viewers. However, I believe some of Han’s fellowmen couldn’t have laughed so heartily. We all know that Asian people are much shorter on average than European people. Whenever the other characters make fun of Han, I feel a bit of offence. On the one hand, the character of Han is created for the purpose of entertainment. On the other hand, it also shows what the white people sees of Asian people. The different characteristics each character is endowed with implies a tint of white people’s racial supremacy.
In the latest episode 8 of the fourth season, when Han wants to find his iPad back, he tells the other people in the restaurant that“ I’m in a casual flirtation with a woman in Australia. She is part aboriginal, but she has great personality”. His remark of the woman shows clear racial discrimination against aboriginal Australian people. Even to Han himself, he knows that regular blonde ladies are out of his league, so he turns to an Australian woman who is part aboriginal. When Han points out that she has great personality despite her part blood of aboriginality, it seems that he is afraid of other people’s tease of her race or he himself considers the inferiority of aboriginal race.
