Generally speaking, there are a variety of personal experience that has led to a new insight about myself. Yet, the experience that helped me most will be talked about in the following essay. People will successfully do everything as long as we have the guts to surpass ourselves and to try something difficult. Sometimes, we failed to do something because we did not dare to take our first step.

When first setting my foot into the United States of America, I found that everything was entirely different. The very first difficulty that I encountered was language barrier. I think that every student whose mother language is not English will have tough time in communicating with others in English.

That was a moonlit evening with thousands of hundreds of shining stars in the sky, I was sitting under a tree enjoying this beautiful scene when someone came and talked to me. “Hello, I do not think that I have seen you before.”, actually I completely understood what he said, but I just could not speak anything. Hence, I waved my hands fiercely. After feeling weird, he left. From then on, I did not dare to hang out with any newly-made friends or even asked them for help, because I was afraid that they could not understand what I was trying to say and therefore be estranged from me. However, one day, I persuaded myself to talk with a group of people sitting in front of me discussing something heatedly. Fortunately, I did not find any difficulties in communicating with others, and I finally knew that the most tremendous difficulty is not the difficulty itself, on the contrary, we are our own worst enemy. People are easy to defeat any kinds of difficulties when they are able to defeat their own fears and take the first step (Steven & Baumeister 22). I took my first step, and I defeated my own fears.

Furthermore, the second biggest difficulty that I confronted was that I was used to living under the care given by my parents, that is to say, I did not really know how to take good care of myself, like how to wash clothes. I was just extremely afraid that I would screw it up in that I had never washed my own clothes before in China. Compared with American kids, the children in China are less likely to know how to take care of themselves because their parents have the tendency to do almost everything for them (Chin, et al 431). I am a typical Chinese boy who were brought up by my parents who spared no effort to look after me. I was not an independent person in the very beginning when coming to America in the first place. Once upon a time, when I was in a laundry room waiting for washing my clothes. I discovered a people who expertly washed his clothes. I turned to ask him “hey, buddy, how can you do this so well?”. He answered “because I have known how to wash my own clothes for ages, and I think even kids in America know how to do it. ”. Hearing about this really inspired me, but I still did not dare to do it. As a matter of fact, I could hear my heart-beating even if I was in a every noisy room with numerous people talking about variety of things. In the end, I made my decision and I started putting my clothes into the laundry machine. Out of a sudden, a person near me touched me and said “Oh my god, I can’t believe that you put socks with other things, and you put your red shirt with white pants together. ” . It was embarrassing, but as least I learned how to separate my clothes. Under his tuition, I finally did something that I thought impossible.

In the end, I began to know that if I could do this, there was nothing that I can not do, all I need to do is to trust myself and give myself a chance to take the first step. When succeeding in taking the first step, we could find that the thing is a lot easier than we thought. Coming to the United States of America really changed me in a splendid way, and I eventually know that human beings are created to defeat fears and to overcome something that we think we can not do. As long as we have the desire to surpass ourselves and to try something difficult, there is nothing we can not do.-M
