On Mom

2015-07-07 来源: 51due教员组 类别: Essay范文

Mom is a one of the most popular American sitcoms, which was premiered in 2013 on CBS. The show focuses on the hilarious lives of two single moms, Bonnie and her daughter, Christy, along with the lives of other three women’s lives, who they meet in the alcoholic anonymous meeting. For this article, I’d like to take a close look at episode 16 of season 2.

In this episode, Regina, who is put into jail for embezzling money, gets out of the three years earlier. She turns into a religious person after she comes out. Although I myself is not a religious person, the description of religion in this episode seems a little offensive to me. Religion should be something holy or private, but it becomes a point to create humor. Regina forgives Christy for gambling away all her money because she thinks it is God’s will to take the dirty money away. Whatever she says or does in relation to God, the other people take her as crazy or weird. Bonnie takes her behavior as a skit and always makes faces while Regina makes faces. Being shown as the most irresponsible mom, Bonnie is the most bitter one in the group, so she is always the one who doesn’t show understanding towards others.

I think Marjorie is the moral character in this show. She is the sponsor of Christy in the meeting and has cancer but she is there for all her friends. Her place is the shelter for the others whenever they are in need and she is also the one who consoles and concerns the other friends when they are sad. She is the only one who visits Regina in the jail every month. She is also the only one who listens very carefully to Regina’s prayer with respect. When Bonnie blasphemes Regina’s faith, Marjorie persuades her to be supportive with reasonable words. However, Marjorie’s reaction to Regina’s behavior at the end of the episode contradicts Marjorie’s role in some way. She tells Bonnie that happy as she is for Regina’s release from the prison, but she cannot stay with Regina with one more night because she cannot stand all the “Jesus forgives me” and “Jesus loves me” talk. So deep in Marjorie’s heart, she betrays her moral stance.

Though the characters make fun of each other nearly all the time, they seem very “human” to me. They care for each other when there are difficult situations and show their concern with bitter words. It’s always the stereotype that they show difference to each other at first with words and then show their concern for each other with behavior. There is also one character who is depicted as a “faceless” person. Jill, another friend from the meeting, is divorced and very rich. She is depicted as an alien of the planet, who only loves drinking and is always at lost during the conversations. She has never showed any concerns for any other people. When other people makes fun of Regina’s religious talk, she only takes it as a serious story. I think the show aims to make people laugh by dwelling on different weird people, so less human Jill doesn’t change my opinion of the offensive act.

The offensive act made by Bonnie and Christy takes place in the middle of the episode. I think the fact that Christy gambles away Regina’s money leads up to the offensive act since Regina forgives her only because she is converted and the forgiving part itself is a laughing point of the show. I don’t think the context of the act would change how we respond because I think the forgiving part can be for any reasons and even if it’s for religious reason, the show should not make the other characters to laugh at Regina.

When it comes to consequences to the offensive act, I cannot find any in this episode. So in a word, I think the show condones the offensive behavior.
