Most sourcebooks on religion present significant texts that contribute to the characterization of different religions rather than different religious topics. In the volume, the reader becomes acquainted with mysteries of Cybele, for instance, by studying texts from the New Testament as a background, all texts being kept together as a whole. Such compilations as Sacred Books of the East give us a wealth of data on each religion but little insight into the common denominator of religions. Mircea Eliade, the well-known Chicago historian of religions, has tried to remedy this vacuum by creating what he calls “a thematic sourcebook on the history of religions.” He considers that “only by reading a certain number of religious texts related to the same subject are a student able to grasp their structural similarities and their differences.”
This short volume “From Primitives to Zen” proves Eliade’s conception that readers have to read its entirety and not just consult it as a reference volume. Whatever our reaction to this pronouncement, it seems to me that the issue here is really the structure of phenomenological categories, not the structure of the texts. Eliade’s contribution is a most welcome addition to the stock of sourcebooks already at our disposal. This is a good recommendation, for only a total knowledge of its contents provides the reader with a balanced view of the important phenomenological categories of religion.
