China is a multinational country with a rather long history and Canada is a newly established country with the characterization of modern immigrations. Thinking of the two countries which are distant from each other not only in geography but also in many a dimension, it is not difficult to figure out some apparent discrepancies between the two. The long distance and distinct development routes of the two countries have ever decided the differences and divergences in many aspects. This essay is attempting to make a brief comparison between China and Canada in terms of literature, the realization of national identity and pop culture. In this way, it could be better understand a country and the colorful and intriguing phenomena behind it.

Literature plays a vital role in expressing the idea, representing national characters and reflecting the history of a nation. Several mixed historical and cultural factors lead to the differences in theme, genre and development of Chinese literature and Canadian literature are quite. Political lyrical literature can be regarded as a special feature or genre of Chinese literature. Maybe it is because ‘writing has, from the earliest times, been valued in Chinese culture yet for centuries, reading remained a largely elite and male skill’ (Mitter 118). The Book of Odes, the first collection of Chinese poetry is perfect example and it starts the tradition of connecting closely the individual’s life with the country’s future. Besides, Chinese has its unique and clear advancement route. Based on Chinese, each dynasty has generated literary forms such as poems of Tang, song iambic verses of Song, dramas of Yuan and novels of Qing. They altogether have established a literary garden with diversity. As for Canada, it is inevitable that ‘early Canadian writing tried to imitate British literature, but the experience with nature and wilderness was not the same as in Europe’ (Canadian Literature), resulting from being the colonial of Britain and enjoying the splendor and majesty of the nature of North America. ‘Canadian writers developed their own approaches to conveying the experiences they had with the landscape and Canadian writing today may still focus on the themes, but with contemporary variations. This may be applied to the wilderness, climate, culture, identity, language, etc.’ (Canadian Literature). Compared with Chinese literature, ‘survival is a key theme in Canadian literature’ (Canadian Literature). The Noble prize winner, Alice Munro’s works can exemplify this point.

Another self-evident difference lies in the realization of the national identity. Hegel has stated that ‘the nation-state is the highest form of a political entity, the political shell of the spirit of a nation, and the material reflection of nation’s will and fate’ (qtd. In George 259). In addition, Anderson has defined nation as ‘an imaginary community’ (124). Actually, with the frequent communication of human beings, it is very hard to find out a country composed of the sole nation. For an individual in an ethnical or national group, the national identity is an obvious attachment of himself to a nation and also a kind of emotional dependence on the nation. The realization of national identity could be of great help in solving some universal or general problems such as education and also exert profound influence on the further development of cultural diversity. A ubiquitous problem confronted by most of multinational countries is to integrate various groups with diverse language, culture, religious belief and race into the only one nation-state. There is no doubt that China is a representative of this sort. It has never ended its efforts to reach the harmonious relation of 56 nations with Han as the center and this measure has been taken from the ancient times. However, Canada seems to have shown another picture. ‘In Canada, there is a sort of indeterminacy about our identity and that is okay. We are uneasy about our identity’ (Pop Culture Lecture). They have no passion for seeking a unified norm or identity among the multiple of races and nations in Canada. As far as I am concerned, Canada has paid more attention to seeking common ground while accepting the existing differences and respected these differences of a variety of groups. However, it should be noticed that this approach has also caused social cracks.

Despite a number of differences between China and Canada, an underlying historical context which should never be ignored is that it is an era of globalization. The frequent exchanges and communications in economy, culture and politics as well as other aspects of social life have reshaped and reformed the structure and lifestyle of nations involved in this great wave. Therefore, many similarities exist in the popular culture of the two countries. ‘Cultural theorists sometimes define culture by such categories as high-brow, middle-brow and low-brow, which are related to economic competency and social statues’ (Pop Culture Lecture). The cultural activities each category prefers and the identity of people each category has almost remain the same. High-brow in China and Canada are usually elites and they are fond of culture of social ruling group. ‘They like to attend a ballet or opera or symphony performance, visit a painting gallery and have special taste of literature rather than to spend their time in endless television soap operas or shopping which are popular with the common people’ (Pop Culture Lecture). What is more, both China and Canada are greatly impacted by the popular culture of the United States. As the only super nation in the world, without exaggeration, the United States has been in a dominant position in many fields and popular culture is not an exception. The Hollywood movies, NBA or famous singers have their zealots in both countries. This may be an identical problem for Chinese and Canadian governments, namely, how to protect one’s own cultural industry and compete with the American popular culture.
